CodeAlong respects your privacy. This page explains what we collect, why, and what your rights are. CodeAlong is the data controller for the data described here. Contact: privacy@codealong.dev.

What we collect

  • Account: email, display name, login identifiers.
  • Learning: lessons started/completed, code you submit, challenge attempts, progress.
  • Billing: handled by Stripe (Merchant of Record). We store a customer ID and subscription status — never card data.
  • Technical: IP, user-agent, error logs.
  • Analytics (consent only): page views and feature usage via PostHog.
  • AI feedback inputs: code you submit to AI-graded features is sent to OpenAI / Anthropic to generate feedback.

Why we use it

  • To run the Service you signed up for (contract).
  • To keep it secure and prevent abuse (legitimate interest).
  • To email you about CodeAlong: new lessons and courses, features, and offers for CodeAlong itself (legitimate interest). Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing does not affect your account.
  • Analytics only with your consent — toggle any time in the cookie banner.
  • Legal obligations (tax, lawful requests).

Who we share with

We use a small number of vetted providers — see the full list on our subprocessors page. Each has signed a Data Processing Agreement with us.

International transfers

Some providers are outside the EU/EEA. Transfers rely on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

Retention

  • Account & learning data — while your account exists, plus up to 30 days after deletion.
  • Email list: until you unsubscribe or delete your account. After that, our email provider keeps your address marked as unsubscribed, so you are never emailed again.
  • Analytics — up to 12 months.
  • Error logs — up to 90 days.
  • AI prompt logs — up to 30 days, then deleted.
  • Billing records — kept by Stripe per their policy.

Your rights

Under the GDPR (and similar laws in the UK and California), you can access, correct, delete, export, or restrict your data, and object to certain processing. Email privacy@codealong.dev. You can also complain to your local data protection authority (in Portugal: CNPD).

AI

Code you submit to AI features is sent to OpenAI and Anthropic to generate feedback. We use providers on plans that do not train their models on your data.
